Mea Kaua O Kaihewalu
(The Weapons of the Kaihewalu Lua)

The sacred tradition of Lua, the only indigenous warrior art of the People of Hawai’i was intially empty-handed and evolved to incorporate weaponry. The art photography imagery contained in this book showcases the Lua weaponry of ‘Olohe Solomon Kaihewalu.

While this compilation began with the intent to simply show the weaponry in an artistic way, it quickly evolved. If you search for imagery of a Hawaiian woman warrior, you will find not a single image. Hopefully this book will give an energetic snap shot of what a proficient and powerful woman warrior (koa wahine or ‘olohe wahine) might have looked like over two hundred years ago. As a disciple of ‘Olohe Kaihewalu, a koa (warrior) would be highly proficient in open-handed techniques before he or she was allowed to learn the weaponry. At the time of Kumu Manu’s over two decades of intense training, the weapons shown in this book were reserved only for ‘Olohe’s senior ranks.

In Maoli (original) times, the weapons had their own identity. They had a name and its own place within the house (hale). A weapon slept and was awakened only by its kia’i (guardian) for practice or battle.

A conceptual and artistic photograph of a person from the back, holding a long, wooden, two-pronged fork-like staff vertically in the center. The person's body is divided vertically into two distinct halves: the left side is in grayscale, depicting an arm and back with a black tribal tattoo, while the right side is in warm, golden tones, showing an arm and back with another tribal tattoo. The person's hair is long and flows down their back. They are wearing a red cloth draped around their lower body. The words "METAPHYSICAL" are written vertically in red on the left side of the image, and "PHYSICAL" are written vertically in red on the right side. The background is a dark, gradient mix of red and black.

The Archetype of the Woman Protector

Inspired by her own self-reflection, Trailblazer in Women’s Empowerment, Dr. Kumu Michelle Manu delves into the metaphysical. Utilizing her skills as a Coach, Educator and Wellness Counselor, this book brings light to the potential reawakening of a forgotten archetype—the Woman Protector. She challenges readers to question why and how to live out this protector archetypal behavior, which involves both spiritual and physical or aptly described as the ‘Seen’ and ‘Unseen’, the ‘Physical’ and the ‘Non-Physical’.

“For the true warrior/protector seeking a guide on how to navigate both the physical and metaphysical/spiritual worlds this is a must have body of knowledge for anyoneʻs library. As an avid reader it has been years that I have read a book from cover to cover…”

“In her thought-provoking book, *The Archetype*, Dr. Kumu Michelle Manu invites us on a profound journey of self-discovery and empowerment…”
